Legion

Mr. Lewis never ceases to amaze me. Every time I think I have heard all his really good insights he comes out for another round swinging for the fences. I am reading a book called "Why I am a Christian" by John Stott. Not too far into it so I do not know how good it is yet, but he quotes Lewis speaking about his life outside of Christ. I think it is really interesting because I just had a similar revelation about my life. So basically the back ground of this quote is Lewis is thinking about his life before he became a Christian and how at the time he thought he was a fairly good person years later he says this...

For the first time I examined myself with a seriously practicle purpose. And there I found what appalled me; a zoo of lusts, a bedlam of ambitoins, a nursery of fears, a harem of fondled hateds. My name was Legion

Preach it Lewis!

Kind of goes along with what he said in Mere Christianity. I am paraphrasing, but it went something like: A really bad man thinks he is not so bad for all of that, it is the truly good man who realizes just how bad he really is.

I love him too!

god, what superb words - zoo, nursery, harem. represents so well the some of the most insiduous institutions of society. nursery, while having less disturbing connotations, has an even greater punch when used in this context.
